Invitation

Dear European Brewer spectrophotometer user community:

This is an invitation to European Brewer operators to participate in the second Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) intercomparison that will be held at El Arenosillo Atmospheric Sounding Station of the “Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial” (INTA) during the period September 1-15, 2007. This second campaign will be a joint exercise of the Regional Dobson Calibration Canter for Europe (RDCC-E) and the Brewer spectrophotometers organized by the RBCC-E in collaboration with the “Area of Instrumentation and Atmospheric Research” of “INTA, and under the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) support.

RBCC-E

In November 2003, and within the GAW/WMO program, the Regional Brewer Calibration Centre for RA-VI Region (Europe) (RBCC-E) was established at the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory (IZO, Canary Islands), managed by the “Instituto Nacional de Meteorología” (INM, Spain). Technical and organization information of the RBCC-E can be obtained at www.rbcc-e.org. The RBCC-E is advised by experts of the Ad-Hoc Regional Brewer Scientific Group (RBSG-E), see the list in Annex 1, with particular working tasks (see Annex 2).

At present, the RBCC-E maintains a triad of reference instruments. The Regional Primary Reference Spectrophotometer (B157) and the Regional Travelling Reference Spectrophotometer (B185) which can be transported to field calibration missions are part of the triad. All the spectrophotometers are absolutely calibrated at IZO and regularly compared against the World Brewer Reference Triad (BRT) maintained by the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC, Toronto) by calibrations provided by the International Ozone Services (IOS).

In order to maintain the continuity of the calibration scale of the BRT with the current transfer, the travelling reference B017 operated by experts of IOS will participate in this intercomparison. That will allow participants to order IOS for technical servicing on their instruments during the campaign. As the action is focused mainly on re-calibration of Brewer spectrophotometers from the Iberonesia network (http://www.iberonesia.com/brewer/), only up to seven external Brewer instruments can be hosted.

The Dobson campaign is organized by Regional Dobson Calibration Centre-Europe (WMO-RDCC-RA-VI) Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg (Germany). During the first days both calibration campaigns will perform in parallel, while the last days are reserved for the Dobson and Brewer comparison. During the comparison exercise ozone-sondes will be launched for Umkehr measurement validation and to assert the assumptions used in Brewer and Dobson retrieval algorithms of the ozone height and temperature.

The QASUME unit of the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos / World Radiation Center (PMOD /WRC) will participate providing the spectral global UV reference for the ultraviolet measurements. At the same time, a national calibration campaign of broadband instruments measuring erythermal irradiance will be held.

Schedule of the Intercomparison

The 2nd RBCC-E Calibration Campaign, El Arenosillo, Huelva (Spain) during 1st - 15th September 2007:

Note: Click on Agenda tab below to see a detailed events list.

Events

The following operations are offered by the RBCC-E during the intercomparison:

  • Ozone calibration against the RBCC-E travelling reference (B185) and the World travelling reference (B017) managed by IOS (International Ozone Services).
  • Compilation of the calibration histories of the instruments
  • UV calibration performed by the QASUME (Quality Assurance of Spectral Ultraviolet Measurements in Europe) unit from the PMOD-WRC.
  • Umkehr validation against ozone-sondes.

Location of the Intercomparison

The El Arenosillo Atmospheric Sounding Station (INTA). Accommodation details are given in Annex 3

Technical Requirements

The instruments should be operative, equipped with tripods and run by their usual operator. History of the instrument (AVG Files), last calibration and recent observations (B files) must be available at the intercomparison. Updated technical aspects can be checked through www.rbcc-e.org.

Funding for instruments maintenance

Travelling, instrument transportation and accommodation costs should be covered by the participants. Extra financial support for developing countries or countries with economies in transition may be available from WMO-GAW. In case of major repairs, the guests can directly order the service with the IOS Company.
